Baxter On His Pitso Rivalry

SuperSport United head coach, Stuart Baxter, has spoken highly of his rival, Pitso Mosimane, ahead of their clash with Mamelodi Sundowns this weekend.

Baxter and Mosimane have gone head-to-head several times in the last few seasons while the Englishman was at Kaizer Chiefs, with the last four Absa Premiership titles being shared between them.

Now, as they prepare to do battle in the first Tshwane Derby of 2016/17, Baxter says that the rivalry is a natural one, and one that is ultimately based on respect.

Speaking to the media ahead of the game, Baxter said, “I think there’s a natural rivalry between two professionals that have been at each other’s throat for the last three or four years, but I think it’s a rivalry based on respect. It’s not that we don’t like each other or don’t like the way the other plays football.

“You get rivalries like between Arsene Wenger and Tony Pulis where they just don’t like each other’s football, the same with Sam Allardyce and Arsene, but it’s not like that with us.

“I respect what he’s done at Sundowns, he’s taken a situation where Patrice was investing lots of money and playing a lottery in terms of buying and selling players, and Pitso has given them some stability, credibility and longevity. I have great respect for that, and I’m sure he respects whatever I’ve achieved too. We get on ok until we’re on the field!”

Baxter went on to say, “Pitso says that he enjoys when we meet up because I think, you know, if you’re going to dance then you’ve got to have someone to dance with. You need a decent partner to push you on to dance better.”

SuperSport take on Sundowns at Loftus Stadium on Sunday afternoon for a spot in the MTN8 semi-finals, and they will both be looking to bounce back after losing their last games against Platinum Stars and Enyimba respectively.
