MTN8
Result: Mamelodi Sundowns 3-1 SuperSport United
Date: 28 August 2016
Venue: Loftus Versfeld Stadium
Sibusiso Vilakazi scored on his Mamelodi Sundowns debut, as the Brazilians defeated SuperSport United 3-1 in their MTN8 quarterfinal tie.
The game got off to an exciting start, with both sides showing their attacking intent, while SuperSport tried to shake up Denis Onyango from deadball situations.
Sundowns eventually broke the deadlock after 17 minutes as SuperSport failed to deal with Keagan Dolly's corner, which allowed Wayne Arendse to poke home from six-yards out.
Pitso Mosimane's charges were dealt a blow after 24 minutes when Leonardo Castro was forced off with an injury, after a collision with Morgan Gould. He was replaced by Percy Tau.
Sudowns had Denis Onyango to thank for keeping the visitors at bay, as the Ugandan produced a few fine saves to deny the likes of Jeremy Brockie and Bradley Grobler.
SuperSport suffered an injury blow of their own just before the break, as Grobler was forced off with an injury. He was replaced by Kingston Nkhatha.
However, Nkhatha made an immediate impact as the Zimbabwean rose well to send a looping header into the far corner to level matters on the stroke of halftime.
The opening exchanges of the second half proved to be a quiet affair, with no real goal-mouth action taking place, which prompted Baxter to introduce Cole Alexander on the hour-mark.
Chances were hard to come by, but Sundowns eventually restored their lead in the 74th minute when Hlompho Kekana's volley deflected off Sibusiso Vilakazi's face and sailed past Williams.
Sundowns grabbed a third goal a few minutes later, as Khama Billiat cut inside before placing the ball into the far corner, after some good build-up.
Mosimane threw on Bangaly Soumahoro for the closing stages to shut up shop, as the Brazilians managed to hold on and secure their spot in the semi-final.
