Ovono Nightmare Leads To Bucs' MTN8 Exit

MTN 8

Result: Bidvest Wits 2-1 Orlando Pirates

Date: 27 August 2016

Venue: Bidvest Stadium

Felipe Ovono endured tough evening with Orlando Pirates, as the Buccaneers lost 2-1 to Bidvest Wits in the MTN8 quarterfinal.

The Clever Boys enjoyed an encouraging start, as they had most of possession and also forced Felipe Ovono into a good save inside the opening 10 minutes.

However, Pirates were awarded a penalty after 14 minutes when Thulani Hlatshwayo brought down Tendai Ndoro. Oupa Manyisa stepped up and made no mistake from the spot, 1-0.

Despite going a goal down, Wits continued to dominate the possession as the half went on but were let down by their final ball from the likes of Daine Klate and Mhango.

Wits eventually leveled matters in the 37th minute when Felipe Ovono failed to hold onto Buhle Mkhwanazi's towering header which sailed over the goal line, 1-1.

Pirates were lucky not to have gone behind just before the break, as their troubles with defending set-pieces continued as Mkhwanazi headed inches wide in the 42nd minute.

Muhsin Ertugral opted for a double change at the start of the second half, as he introduced Thabiso Kutumela and Thabo Qalinge for Riyaad Norodien and Thabo Rakhale.

The second half continued in the same fashion as the first, with Wits dictating the encounter, while they hit the woodwork through Thabang Monare's volley after 60 minutes.

Ovono endured a tough evening with a number of handling errors, and was like lucky not to have conceded in the 70th minute when he dropped a simple catch, but Hlatshwayo failed to make the contact with the ball from six-yards out.

Wits eventually took the lead after 75 minutes as another Ovono error allowed Hlatshwayo to fire home from close range, after the goalkeeper failed to deal with Elias Pelembe's tame effort.

Ertugral introduced Ayanda Nkosi in the closing stages as they looked for a way back in the clash, however the score remained 2-1 to Wits at the full-time whistle.

The clash also ended on a sour note for the Clever Boys, as Xola Mlambo was sent off in stoppage time after receiving a second yellow card for dissent.

Here's how they lined up:
