Chippa United coach Dan Malesela says that despite their impressive 2-0 win over Platinum Stars in a MTN8 quarterfinal on Saturday, he is happiest about pleasing the fans.
Goals in each half from Rhulani Manzini and Menzi Masuku handed Chippa the victory on the day and although Malesela was not completely pleased with his side’s performance, he was happy to see the fans smile.
“Unfortunately what we normally play we started very late, but I understand that in cup games there is a lot of tension particularly for our team that has never been beyond the first round,” said Malesela after the match.
“It is a good thing though to win and what pleases me the most is when I hear the supporters happy. We are here to entertain them, nothing else. The people must be happy and when they go home they must have something positive to talk about.”
Touching on his side’s performance which was impressive at times with their slick passing and entertaining build-up play, Malesela said there is still room for improvement.
“We should not play football like we are scared of the ball, this is something which we must embrace and the expression showed by the boys echoes what I want to see happen for South African football,” added the Chippa coach.
“This is just the beginning, it is not the finished product – there is a whole lot of things to put into the players and we will get better with time.
“We want to go as far as we can in this competition (MTN8). We will take it as it comes, this is the first step.”
Man of the match and creator of the second goal, Thembinkosi Lorch echoed his coach’s statements and also thanked him for the opportunity to play
“I want to thank the coach for believing in me and giving me the chance to display my talent,” said Lorch. “I am happy with how I played today, but I have to keep it up and work even harder so we can win the semifinal.”
