Chippa Cruise Into MTN8 Semifinals

MTN8 Quarterfinal

Full Time: Platinum Stars 0-2 Chippa United

Date: 27 August 2016

Venue: Royal Bafokeng Stadium

A comprehensive performance from Chippa United saw them cruise into the semifinals of the MTN8 after comfortably beating Platinum Stars 2-0 in a quarterfinal match at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

A horrible mistake by Isaac Nhlapo in the ninth minute saw him with a poor back pass to his goalkeeper, allowing Rhulani Manzini to pounce on the loose ball, round the keeper and slot home to give Chippa an early lead, 1-0.

In the 17th minute Buyani Sali almost doubled Chippa’s lead, but his low powerful shot from 24-yards out skimmed the wrong side of the post.

Stars struggled in attack which resulted in coach Cavin Johnson making an early change as he replaced Henrico Botes with Sipho Sene in the 34th minute.

Five minutes later some good build-up play from Chippa saw Rhulani Manzini try his luck from just inside the box, but Mbongeni Mzimela made a good save to deny him.

The half ended 1-0 in favour of Chippa United.

Ten minutes into the second half Rhulani Manzini almost scored Chippa’s second when he met a Marc Van Heerden set-piece, but his ten-yard header went just wide of the target.

On the hour mark Stars created their best chance of the match when Ndumiso Mabena latched onto a through ball from Vuyo Mere, but he dragged his 18-yard shot wide of the goal.

In the 73th minute Chippa were very unlucky not to double their lead when a 16-yard shot from Andile Mbenyane struck the right-hand post after some good build-up play.

The result was put beyond doubt six minutes later when a swift counter attack by Chippa concluded with Menzi Masuku tapping home from close range after getting onto the end of a Thembinkosi Lorch pass, 2-0.
