Silverware Long-Time Coming For Wits & Hunt
Bidvest Wits secured their spot in the 2016 MTN8 final this weekend with a 3-0 aggregate win over Cape Town City, and will be hoping to finally land a trophy.
It’s been over six years since The Clever Boys managed to get some silverware in their locker following the 2010 Nedbank Cup victory when they beat AmaZulu 3-0, while Gavin Hunt has been waiting four years to win something.
Hunt’s last trophy also came in the Nedbank Cup back in 2012 when SuperSport United beat Mamelodi Sundowns, and despite improving Wits’ performance in the league since his arrival, silverware has evaded him up until now.
Interestingly, two players who played vital roles in that 2010 win for Wits were Darren Keet and Sifiso Myeni, both of whom returned to the club this season, and Wits' management will be hoping that they can play a part in leading them to victory once again.
It remains to be seen who the Clever Boys will face in the MTN8 final – set for 1 October – with Chippa United and Sundowns playing out a 0-0 draw in the first-leg of their tie, and the second-leg taking place this week.
Wits have spent big money in recent years in order to build one of the strongest squads in South Africa, and they will no doubt be looking for some reward on that when they get the chance to land the MTN8 trophy next month.
