Simba SC coach Didier Gomes says his side showed they are one of the best teams on the African continent in their narrow loss to Kaizer Chiefs this weekend.
The Tanzanian giants had it all to do at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium, as they trailed Amakhosi 4-0 following a first leg thumping at the hands of the Glamour Boys.
Simba maintained the belief that they could come back in the second leg – and they nearly did as they beat Chiefs 3-0 on Saturday, though it wasn’t to be as they lost 4-3 on aggregate.
After the match, Gomes rued his side’s missed opportunities against Chiefs, but feels his team deserved to win based on the effort they put in on the day.
“We all know that Simba is one of the best teams in Africa and we showed that today against (Kaizer Chiefs) but we had done too many mistakes in the first match and the score was too heavy for the opponent but we showed today we have the level to go to the semi-finals but it was a little bit too late,” Gomes told the media.
“But I am proud of my players because they showed big commitment, they were very wonderful and had a big fighting spirit, they fought until the end of the match, they didn’t give up and for sure we deserved to win.
"We had a lot of scoring opportunities to kill the game and qualify but unfortunately football sometimes is like this; if we managed a better result in the first leg, for sure we could reach the semi-finals,” the French coach said.
