Former Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach, Farouk Khan has spoken about the team’s current style of play compared to when they were famous for being the ‘Glamour Boys’.
Chiefs have on a few occasions, been called out by the fans this season for their style of play, although their ‘direct’ approach has gotten them to the top of the Absa Premiership log.
However, some figures in the football fraternity have elaborated more on why the fans may still not be completely satisfied with the performances from Amakhosi this season.
Speaking to the Siya crew this week, here is what Khan had to say.
“The reason why Sundowns has been successful because their philosophy is a long-term philosophy which is based on certain aspects which are common to the type of players they’ve signed, to the style of football they play, the attractiveness to the game which then attracts more supporters and these are all ingredients.”
“It is not just about winning, I remember when I was at Chiefs, Kaizer made one thing clear, Kaizer Chiefs is a team which is founded on being called the Glamour Boys based on the fact that they played a brand of football which was both attractive and brought in the required results and that is their philosophy that they built this team on, that is why they became so popular, now if you look at it, a lot of fans are saying – yes we are happy we are winning but where are not happy with the way we are playing.”
“Generally, if you speak to anybody in football, they will tell you, Chiefs are not playing the type of football, which we know they are capable of playing. When Ted (Dumitru) and I won the league, we played a brand of football which was both easy on the eye and the results were forthcoming, people were in awe and people are still talking about that particular league championship. Once you have spoiled the fans with a particular brand of football, it is difficult for you to change that,” he said.
