Looking Back: Benni Was Like A Big Brother To Us

In an exclusive interview with Soccer Laduma this week, a Cape Town City defender looked back at a heart-breaking day in the season.

Despite the Citizens having long moved on from Benni McCarthy, the head coach is still remembered by his influence he had on the players at the Mother City-based club.

In this week’s edition of Soccer Laduma, Mozambican left-back, Edmilson Dove looked back on a day in November last year, when City shocked the football fraternity with the news of McCarthy’s departure.

“I found out about it when I woke up in the morning preparing to go to training. I read that he was not there anymore. He was more like a big brother to us than a coach. In addition, he gave us the plat- form to talk to him about everything that we were experiencing and every- thing that we were concerned about.

"He would share with us experiences about his football career and it gave all of us confidence. We had that connec- tion with him. It was sad for us having to continue our journey without him. However, as footballers, we had to ac- cept everything and move on. We had to work with the coach that came in and give him our support and also give our best on the field of play for the team, which is what we have been doing now,” he told Soccer Laduma.
