CAF Confederation Cup Final
Teams: TP Mazembe v SuperSport United
Date: 19 November 2017
Venue: Stade TP Mazembe
SuperSport United will be in search of an away goal when they face TP Mazembe in the first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup final at the Stade TP Mazembe.
The match is scheduled to get underway at 15h30 (South African time).
The hosts are looking to defend their title after beating MO Béjaïa in last year’s final. A club steeped in history, the giants from DR Congo could be forgiven for fancying themselves on home soil.
However, Matsatsantsa — who will be playing in their first CAF final — have proven themselves capable of upsetting the apple cart on their travels, most notably in a 3-1 away win over Club Africain in the semi-finals.
Jeremy Brockie, the tournament’s top scorer with 10 goals, has led the line with distinction for SuperSport. However, after travelling with New Zealand’s national team for their FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Peru, the striker is sure to be suffering from jetlag.
However, in Ivorian goalkeeper Sylvain Gbohouo, TP Mazembe also have a player who is recovering from a notably difficult international break.
Gbohouo has faced criticism after Ivory Coast lost 2-0 to Morocco, eliminating them from qualification for next year’s FIFA World Cup. His mental state may have been affected as a result.
It could be argued that this fixture comes at a difficult time for both sides, due to the close proximity to the international break, but they have each made it this far as a result of their ability to perform consistently under trying circumstances.
The last times these sides met in Lubumbashi was in a group stage clash this June, which saw SuperSport come back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2.
Here's how they line up:
TP Mazembe: Matampi, Issama, Kimwaki, Kabaso, Kasusula, Sinkala, Adjei, Kalaba, Ushindi, Malango, A.Traore.
SuperSport: Williams, Nhlapo, Daniels, Mashamaite, Modiba, Furman, Mbule, Phala, Wome, Brockie, Grobler.
