Teams: South Africa v Uganda
Date: 10 June 2021
Venue: Orlando Stadium
Bafana Bafana and Uganda will begin preparations for the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers when they clash in an international friendly match on Thursday evening.
The match will get underway at 18h00.
Bafana will be looking to erase the memory of failing to qualify for the 2022 AFCON finals after a 2-0 loss to Sudan in March this year saw their road come to an end.
The new Bafana era will start without head coach Hugo Broos while his assistant Cedomir Janevski will also not be available after recently testing positive for Covid-19. Which means South Africa's other assistant coach Helman Mkhalele will be in charge of the team.
Bafana have also been hit by a number of withdrawals from key players, as Percy Tau and Teboho Mokoena did not join the camp after testing positive for Covid-19 while the likes of Sipho Mbule, Mosa Lebusa and Mothiba Mvala pulled out due to injuries.
Here are 15 players who were snubbed for the latest Bafana squad.
On the other hand, Uganda's last game was also in the 2022 Afcon qualifiers in March after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Malawi and head coach Mubiru Abdallah is also rebuilding the team after naming a youthful squad.
Among the 23-man squad are two players plying their trade in the DStv Premiership, including Chippa United shot-stopper Ismail Watenga and SuperSport Unietd attacker Moses Waiswa.
Uganda is yet to beat South Africa in their three meetings so far since 2004, as Bafana have won two and drawn one, the last of which was in June 2019 in the COSAFA Cup plate semi-finals, where South Africa beat the Cranes on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation time.
Here's how they line up:
South Africa: Williams, Maela, De Reuck, Sibisi, Mabiliso, Farmer, Brooks, Maboe, Martin, Mkhulise, Hlongwane
Subs: Bvuma, Ngcobo, Modiba, Makgopa, Kutumela
