Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Rulani Mokwena has voiced his opinion on the exclusion of a key player in the Bafana Bafana squad.
Lyle Lakay was not called up for Bafana Bafana's FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Zimbabwe and Ghana. Nyiko Mobbie, who is right footed and usually plays a right back, was played at left back in the match against the Black Stars at FNB Stadium. Lakay has two assists and has contributed to four clean sheets so far this season in the DStv Premiership.
When quizzed about Lakay's exclusion from the national team, Mokwena was surprised that the midfielder had not received a call-up to the squad.
"I watch Bafana. I watched Bafana against Ghana and the entire COSAFA tournament. When I watch Bafana, I see (Evidence) Makgopa upfront, I see (Bongokuhle) Hlongwane upfront and I see a right footed full back (Mobbie) at left back. So...," Mokwena said after Sundowns' 3-0 win over TS Galaxy on Sunday.
On Tuesday morning, Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos announced a 34-man provisional squad for the upcoming back-to-back World Cup qualifiers against Ethiopia.
The Sundowns players who have been included in the squad are Thabiso Kutumela, Mosa Lebusa, Thapelo Morena. Mothobi Mvala and Rushine De Reuck.
