Mokwena On Why New Cup Is Awkward

Although he admits details on the new cup format introduced by the Premier Soccer League this week is sketchy, Rulani Mokwena has said its scheduling is awkward.

The Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach was on Tuesday night asked for his views on the recently launched DStv Compact Cup, where fans vote for the teams that will participate and also stand to win R1-million.

“To tell you the truth, I don’t know too much about the competition. I listened to the presser yesterday after training and I am still not so clued up. We’ve asked management from Sundowns to try and put us in the loop, but it is very difficult for them to give us information on match day minus one (before Baroka clash),” Mokwena told the media after Downs’ 2-1 victory in the DStv Premiership against Bakgakga.

He said their preference was to keep their squad in tip top shape ahead of what is going to be a demanding schedule early next year with the final lap of their title defence and the tough fixtures in the CAF Champions League group stages.

“So we will have a meeting and they (Downs hierarchy) will brief us. I think then the club will inform us about what direction to take. This clearly comes in a space where we’ve got our mid-season break and we would love to have our team together for that, whether it is for football recovery or to prepare for the second half of the season, which is very important for us because it’s got the Champions League group stages and it is the business end of the season where trophies are won and lost,” the coach explained.

“We will see how it goes and take it from there, but I don’t think I have enough information about the tournament to give you enough concrete and conclusive answers, so you will forgive me for that.”
