Pitso Mosimane is counting on striker Mauricio Affonso being a bit of a surprise element to Mamelodi Sundowns’ approach against their stubborn continental rivals, Wydad Casablanca, when they meet on Saturday night.
The two sides clash in Group C of their CAF Champions League fixture in Morocco and Sundowns are hoping to finally beat Wydad in their own backyard having never done so before in all their previous matches.
Affonso, who has scored four goals in nine matches for the Brazilians, could be key to a rare win in Casablanca, Mosimane hopes.
“What you see is what you get with Mauricio, don’t look for more. We brought him here for that role. He is never going to be a Gaston (Sirino) or Themba Zwane or that kind of a player,” Mosimane said of a striker that got on the scoresheet in their 3-0 win over Petro de Luanda in their opening group match last weekend.
“It’s the same when we brought Jeremy Brockie here, we brought him to score the goals. For Mauricio it is not bad when you look at games played and goals scored. He is not bad – he is this kind of a player, a Champions League player and yes maybe we want more fluidity and some backheels. No, there’s no space for that when you go to Casablanca. People like Gaston and Pitso (Mkhulise), there’s less space for them to play there, so he will do the battle for us and you hope he nicks one through a cross, corner or free-kick.”
Downs currently top Group C after they were the only team to win during the opening round of fixtures last weekend.
