The Siya crew reported at the weekend that Anele Ngcongca was closing in on a move to AmaZulu, and now it’s emerged that a Mamelodi Sundowns teammate of his could also join him at the ambitious KZN outfit.
Usuthu have been among the busiest Premiership clubs in beefing up their squad before the transfer window slams shut at the end of the month – notable players like Luvuyo Memela, Siphiwe Tshabalala and Augustine Mulenga were signed last month.
Following his ownership takeover, prominent businessman Sandile Zungu has made his intentions clear with these quality signings and its understood Phakamani Mahlambi could be added in the coming weeks.
Mahlambi, 23, is surplus to requirements at Chloorkop and had initially been linked with a loan move to Swallows FC, but his wages were apparently an issue.
Downs have also requested that the attacker sign a contract extension before he can leave on a short-term deal despite the former Al Ahly star still tied to the club until June 2023.
Given that KZN is his home province, it’s thought Mahlambi may be swayed to move and would potentially team up again with veteran Ngcongca, who himself stopped training with Sundowns several weeks ago ahead of a possible exit.
Kaizer Chiefs had also expressed an interest in signing Mahlambi in what would have been a reunion with coach Gavin Hunt, who gave him his first team debut at Bidvest Wits when he was only 18-years old.
But Amakhosi have a transfer ban, paving the way for Usuthu to strengthen a team that already has some heavy artillery for the new season.
