With there being no sign of Lesedi Kapinga in the Mamelodi Sundowns squad so far this season, an explanation has come from one of the club’s coaches.
Rulani Mokwena addressed the media following Downs’ impressive 2-0 win over Kaizer Chiefs in the DStv Premiership at the weekend and talked briefly about the former Black Leopards star, a player the Siya crew reported last week that the Brazilians had considered loaning out, had one of their rivals expressed a serious interest.
“We don’t have a pecking order, everybody is important,” was Mokwena’s response when asked how far Kapinga was in breaking into the matchday squad, at least.
He was also quizzed about George Maluleka.
“It’s going to be a very long season – they are just as important as Mshishi (Themba Zwane) and Gaston (Sirino). Lesedi is still working extremely hard, he has had one or two issues with medical concerns. But he is getting into that space, although instead of focusing on why this one and that one is not playing let’s focus on the huge improvement some of the players are making,” the coach added.
Kapinga had initially been praised last season for adapting to life at Sundowns in his first season amid further rumours that he would be sent on loan and went on to feature in 19 games from all domestic and continental competitions.
“I mean you have to look at the performances of Rushine and you look at Lyle Lakay, a player I don’t understand why he is not in the national team. But it is what it is, we focus on what we have to focus on and try to improve the team and the performances. Those are the things that we can control and as long as we do that which the club requests of us then we shall do that. That’s our focus,” Mokwena told journalists.
