The Uruguayan featured in Downs’ MTN8 quarterfinal win over Bloemfontein Celtic at the start of the season but has not played an official match since due to injury.
Interest for his services by Al Ahly also sent speculation that he would be leaving the club to reunite with former coach Pitso Mosimane, but this was dismissed by Siya sources at Chloorkop, while joint head coach Manqoba Mnqgithi was adamant before the international break that the midfielder would return strong.
Downs beat AmaZulu 4-3 in their first league game back from the FIFA recess, but Sirino was again a notable absentee, though his injury was thought to be “short term”.
The Siya crew asked Mnqgithi for an update, and his reply was brief, but to the point.
“With Sirino’s injury, he should be back anytime soon,” the coach explained.
“And we are not even rushing him, to be honest. We are still going to need him a lot as the season progresses.”
Sirino played in 41 games for Sundowns last season, scoring 13 goals and contributing with 10 assists as they retained the Absa Premiership title, won the Telkom Knockout and the Nedbank Cup to make up the domestic treble.
