Love Affair – South Americans Signed By Downs

It’s not just Pitso Mosimane who has developed a love affair with South American players – Mamelodi Sundowns started the trend long before his time.

Going down memory lane, there is clear evidence that the Brazilians have always believed that there are gems in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela and Uruguay who can make their mark in the Premier Soccer League.

This week the club confirmed the arrival of forward Mauricio Affonso, making him a new South American to move to Chloorkop.

Downs have signed 11 others before him.

Leonardo Castro (2015-17)

Now a Kaizer Chiefs player, the Colombian forward definitely made his mark at Sundowns and was able to help them win a league and continental title three years ago. Castro scored 16 goals in 62 games for Downs.

Eduardo Ferreira (2009-12)

The defender had some good years at Sundowns having been signed from Ajax Cape Town, but eventually found it tough and returned to South America.

Fabio da Costa (2006-07)

A retired midfielder from Brazil and obviously came in highly recommended, but did not spark all that much under then coach Neil Tovey and Miguel Gamondi, also a South American.

Jorge Acuna (2007-09)

The name must ring a bell for Downs fans. He was influential and left his mark during his time at the club.

Bryan Aldave (2008-09)

Had very little impact and scored three goals in 11 matches and was gone a year later.

Jose Torrealba (2005-07)

Didn’t rattle the net all that much at Downs, managing 15 in 50 games – but there was more to his play. He later joined Chiefs, but was a flop.

Rafael Dudamel (2005-06)

Part of a group brought in by then Argentine-born coach Angel Cappa in his two years at Sundowns, but the goalkeeper only managed seven matches.

Vincente Principiano (2005-06)

Might be considered a failure, but he did wear the Downs jersey for a short period. Not all players from South America were hits.

Gaston Sirino and Ricardo Nascimento are still at Chloorkop and have had successful spells so far. Ali Meza is understood to be on his way out, while Affonso will be under heavy scrutiny to deliver.
