Done Deal? Sundowns Tie Down Influential Star

Word reaching the Siya crew is that Mamelodi Sundowns have successfully tied down one of their influential players to a long-term contract.

Soccer Laduma reported earlier this year that utility midfielder Rivaldo Coetzee had been engaged in talks with the club over a fresh new agreement despite still having one more season to go, albeit one which was an added option.

It was triggered by Sundowns to make sure ‘Riva’ is part of the squad for the 2021/22 season, while discussions over a new deal were ongoing.

According to sources close to the situation, it’s now believed that Coetzee has put pen to paper on a four-year deal, which would then indicate that the player is expected to be at Chloorkop until June 2026 at the very least

This is an unbelievable show of faith in the 24-year-old’s ability and contribution to a side that is currently working on defending their DStv Premiership title and attempting a record fifth successive championship win.

‘Riva’ featured in 31 matches from all competitions on the domestic front as well as Downs’ CAF commitments, receiving genuine praise for how he has made a seamless transition from being a centre back to playing as a defensive midfielder.

So far, he has also played every minute of every Sundowns match during the current campaign either partnering Mothobi Mvala or Andile Jali.

The only blemish, some might argue, is the fact that he hasn’t yet been called up to coach Hugo Broos’ new-look Bafana Bafana side, even though he continues to pick up Man of the Match accolades at his club.

Coetzee made his national team debut when he was just 17 years-old and was on his way to Scottish giants Celtic when a medical revealed he had an underlying injury on his foot, forcing the deal to collapse.

Downs signed him four years ago instead, nursing him back to full fitness, and now he is one of their most valuable – and still quite young – players.
