Mamelodi Sundowns begin their CAF Champions League campaign this weekend, and the Siya crew has been informed that one of their key players has not been registered.
The Brazilians face DR Congo side AS Maniema Union on Sunday in the group stages play-off, and it’s understood Lebo Maboe has not been added to the roster.
It does not come as a surprise, the midfielder suffered a devastating injury back in August, which effectively ruled him out for the rest of the 2021/22 season.
But Downs do not have a short supply of players to fill the void left by the ex-Maritzburg United attacker as shown in their unbeaten run so far in the domestic campaign.
The CAF journey will be a different challenge, however, as Sundowns look to go one better than last season when they were knocked out by Pitso Mosimane’s Al Ahly over two legs in the quarterfinals following a 3-1 aggregate score.
Maboe would have no doubt been a key player.
Although it was probably obvious that the midfielder would not have been ready yet to be registered, co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi, rather surprisingly, refused to comment on the registration of players on Wednesday.
He was asked at a press conference where he and Rulani Mokwena, as well as striker Peter Shalulile, were honoured as the first recipients of the DStv Premiership Coach and Player of the Month awards, respectively ahead of their trip to DR Congo this week.
Maboe is unlikely to feature this season.
