After the Siya crew reported that veteran defender Ricardo Nascimento is unlikely to return to Chloorkop, the crew has learnt that the club has turned to an R8m defender as his possible replacement.
On Tuesday, the crew reported that Nascimento is unlikely to return to South Africa having spent the last two months nursing an injury out in Brazil.
As a result, Sundowns have had to dive into the transfer market to identify a suitable replacement for the 34-year-old who has been a mainstay in Sundowns' star-studded team.
Word reaching the crew is that Downs have identified Cape Town City's towering centre back Taariq Fielies as the ideal candidate to replace Nascimento, while Nkosinathi Sibisi is another name that has been thrown in the hat.
It is public knowledge now that the 28-year-old has been a target of the country’s big three in Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns over the last few seasons, with the player revealing he would be open to making a move if one presents itself.
The Brazilians have been keen on the defender for the past two seasons, and whispers coming out of the corridors at Chloorkop is that the club are preparing a bumper offer for Fielies.
The crew reported last year that City would be willing to listen to offers of around R8m for the defender – something that is well within Sundowns’ reach, although the Tshwane giants do have the luxury of adding a player or two to sweeten the deal.
Fielies is seen as one of the best defenders in the DStv Premiership and is seen as a vital cog Sundowns need if they are to achieve the domestic and continental dominance they so desperately seek.
When contacted by the crew, the player’s representative was unavailable at the time of publishing.
Given that Fielies still has two years to run on his deal with the Citizens, it will take a handsome offer by the Brazilians to convince City boss John Comitis to part ways with one of his prized possessions.
