Mamelodi Sundowns are casting their net far and wide in their search for a centre-back, with a Moroccan star understood to be added to that list, the Siya crew has learnt.
Sundowns’ co-coach Manqoba Mnqithi has been vocal about the club’s need for a left-footed centre-back towards the latter stages of the 2021/22 season.
Despite having one of the biggest squads in the DStv Premiership, the left side of central defence is perhaps the one area where the Brazilians are really spread thin.
Since the departure of veteran defender Ricardo Nascimento to Royal AM, Mosa Lebusa, who has struggled with injuries this season is the club’s only natural left-footed centre-back and for large parts of the season, Sundowns had to make do with a makeshift defence.
As reported by the Siya crew, Sundowns have expressed an interest in Cape Town Spurs centre-back Rushwin Dortley who is also a target for Kaizer Chiefs.
However, the latest news reaching the crew is that Sundowns have also sounded out Moroccan Abdelmounaim Boutouil.
The lanky star was last on the books of Raja Casablanca, although the 24-year-old spent the 2020/21 season on loan with Royale Union Saint-Gilloise in the Belgian second division.
Boutouil will be a free agent at the end of the month and Siya sources have informed the Siya crew that Sundowns are keen on adding the former Moroccan junior international to their star-studded squad next season.
