Should Sundowns Sign A Number Nine?

As previously reported by the Siya crew, Mamelodi Sundowns are looking at transfer options to solve the club's striker issues. Recent comments by coach Pitso Mosimane indicate that a new number nine is needed.

Bradley Grobler

Sundowns should be warned about Grobler, as he has struggled in front of goal this season. In PSL action, he played 1207 minutes and scored just one goal. He netted three goals in early-season cup games too, scoring three times over two games against Kaizer Chiefs in the MTN8. His dip in league form has come after his second round of groin surgery in the last two seasons. Grobler is also similar positionally to January addition, Emiliano Tade, as both are more support strikers who thrive alongside a genuine number nine. Both players are also 31, as is Jeremy Brockie.

Other, younger transfers that Sundowns could target are:

Mwape Musonda

Having netted 16 goals last season in the PSL and a further two in cup action, the Zambian would be the obvious target. However, he may not suit Sundowns’ style of play with no wingers to provide service for him in the air and any forward in Pitso Mosimane’s team is expected to press aggressively and bring teammates into play. Neither of those are strengths of Musonda, who tends to follow a shoot-on-sight policy. His 3.93 shots per 90 minutes were the second most in the PSL.

Gift Motupa

The Bidvest Wits player brings mobility and a powerful shot to the table, and he netted nine PSL goals, with eight from open play. Musonda had the benefit of penalty-taking duties, with four spot-kicks to boost his total whilst Motupa netted just once from the spot. The Clever Boys forward scored 0.63 goals per 90 minutes this season, the best in the entire league.

Kermit Erasmus

Although the striker has been at Cape Town City for less than a season, he is perhaps the best-suited to Sundowns’ style of play. His movement and high work-rate up front would be ideal in a false nine role. He netted three league goals for City in 729 minutes this past season, the ideal reintroduction into South African football. He netted in both games against Masandawana and against Bidvest Wits to highlight his big game temperament.
