Mamelodi Sundowns will not shy away from the fact that their aggressive recruitment and financial muscle gives them an edge over their opponents.
The Tshwane giants are bankrolled by mining mogul Patrice Motsepe and are known to be bullish in the transfer market without sparing any costs. Tlhopane Motsepe has since taken over as the chairman after his father was elected CAF President.
But co-coach Rulani Mokwena, following yet another emphatic victory at the weekend to cement the club’s position at the summit of the DStv Premiership, paid compliment to everyone involved as the Brazilians look for a fifth straight title.
“Well, a lot of people say it’s the resources we have and it’s true. We are blessed to have the leadership that we have in the president, the chairman to support us as much as they support us as much as they do as the management of the club,” Mokwena told the media after Downs brushed off TS Galaxy 3-0 in a league fixture on Sunday evening.
“You can’t speak in isolation with regards to the success of this club – ours is to try and continue what was achieved by our predecessors and fulfil the expectations that are set by this big institution. We are fortunate to come into a club that’s got a very well established culture that is embedded in relentless work ethic.”
Four games into the 2021/22 season and Sundowns are already clear favourites to become runaway log leaders – the rest seemingly playing catch-up.
But Mokwena, and the rest of the technical staff, aren’t getting carried away.
“We are where we are, but the league is a marathon. We’ve got to be professional and diligent. Now it’s about resting and recovering, then we analyse the game, do our corrections and then we prepare for a very difficult game against a good side in Orlando Pirates,” the coach said.
