With Mamelodi Sundowns seemingly having changed their tune regarding a loan spell for striker Keletso Makgalwa, coach Pitso Mosimane has taken a swipe at a counterpart of his for looking down on the player several months ago.
Makgalwa’s loan spell with Maritzburg United last season was ended prematurely by Eric Tinkler, who has arrived as the new coach and felt the player was surplus to requirements as he assessed what he would work with.
Makgalwa spent just six months with the Team of Choice.
“I was a little bit disappointed when Eric Tinkler returned him and felt that he was not the right player,” Mosimane told journalists after Downs’ 3-1 MTN8 victory over Bloemfontein Celtic, a game in which Makgalwa scored the third goal.
“If you remember the match where we played Maritzburg, how he gave Ricardo Nascimento big problems, I was surprised. But these things do happen. I said I have to keep him because he had a brilliant pre-season. With (Emiliano) Tade and Mauricio Affonso injured it gave him a break. He should have played on the wing, but my instinct said he must play as a nine.”
It looks likely then that the 22-year-old will remain a Sundowns player this season.
“He has been unbelievable and reminds me of Percy (Tau) when he was coming up. We had given him the chance and he took the opportunity. It’s good,” Mosimane said.
