Tiyani Mabunda may remain at Mamelodi Sundowns after all, but Siya sources have suggested it would be in a different capacity.
As previously reported, the veteran midfielder did not have his contract at Chloorkop extended when it ended on June 30 and the likes of AmaZulu, Swallows, Sekhukhune United and SuperSport United were believed to have shown interest in his services.
But Downs are apparently keen to rope ‘Shuga’ into an ambassador role at the club, though the full details of what that entails are still a little sketchy at the moment.
Mabunda, 33, joined Sundowns from Black Leopards eight years ago and has won five league titles as well as the CAF Champions League trophy during his spell.
News that his contract had not been extended was no shock – Mabunda failed to make a single appearance for Downs all of last season.
It’s understood there were also offers for him to go out on loan during the 2020/21 campaign, but the player was not keen.
So he spent the rest of the season watching from the stands.
In a twist, the Siya crew can reveal the player and the club are in talks to elevate him to an ambassador role or a position behind the scenes that could help enhance the Downs brand using a player who enjoyed success at the club.
No final decision has been made just yet given that Mabunda would then have to call time on his playing career if he decides to take up a role off the pitch.
