Curse? What Curse? Manqoba Lauds Komphela

Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi has paid a special tribute to Steve Komphela after the Brazilians sealed their fourth straight Premiership title.

Komphela made the surprise move to join Sundowns before the start of the new season, taking up a role as assistant to Mngqithi and his co-coach Rulani Mokwena. Komphela had never won a major competition in the Premier Soccer League, but will now get to put up a championship medal in his home after Sundowns secured the DStv Premiership title with three matches to spare, following a 3-1 victory over SuperSport United on Wednesday.

"I cannot explain how excited I am, because it's one of the reasons we felt he should come join us. We believe he has the ability and he had done tremendous work with Kaizer Chiefs and it's very unfortunate not to win a trophy in that space because I think he played two finals. He was forever in position number two or three in the league. He did exceptionally well, but unfortunately he never got to win a trophy and it was not always his fault," Mngqithi told the media after the victory over SuperSport.

"People were beginning to think he was unlucky. Even us, there were those indicating that he will bring that bad luck to us, but I always believe that those things don't work. The amount of work you put in brings you closer to possibilities of winning something and when we win the championship, it's even more exciting for me that it has taken that away from him. I remember when coach Pitso (Mosimane) made sure that we won the league for Teko (Modise) because everybody was saying Teko brought the bad luck, but at times people tend to stigmatise and think you were never meant to achieve something. The unfortunate part is us the black nation who look at it in that way, instead of supporting each other. Because if you can check the contribution of Steve, especially at Free State Stars and the players he gave an opportunity to at Chiefs, it should indicate the quality of a coach he is."

Sundowns will take Swallows FC, Bloemfontein Celtic and Cape Town City in their final three matches of the campaign.
