Mido, Chiefs & Downs – Why A League Medal Is Unlikely

With George Maluleka having now officially made his switch from Kaizer Chiefs to Mamelodi Sundowns this week, what are his chances of getting a league winners’ medal?

Even though both clubs are in contention for the Absa Premiership trophy at the end of the 2019/20 season, his chances are very slim.

The Premier Soccer League rules do not dictate how the top flight champions distribute the gold medals they are furnished with at the end of the campaign, the handbook only stating that they are handed 35 medals they can do with as they see fit.

Maluleka, according to Chiefs, rejected a deal extension back in March and instead signed a pre-contract with Sundowns, which is believed to have irked management, hence the decision not to offer him a short-term agreement to conclude the season, which was halted – due to the Coronavirus outbreak, around the time his Amakhosi contract saga played out.

So, given those circumstances, it is unlikely that Chiefs will deliver a championship medal to ‘Mido’ should they win the league.

This is despite Maluleka playing 86 percent of their league matches before it was announced this week that he would not be staying on a short-term deal.

He has obviously not kicked a ball for Sundowns just yet, and won’t be able to do so until at least around September when the new season is expected to get underway.

With their squad members, their technical team, army of analysts and non-playing staff, the numbers at Chloorkop are well over 35, meaning it’s unlikely Maluleka will be allocated a medal, unless Sundowns request more from the PSL if they win the league, though the player would not have earned it.

Don’t expect that from Chiefs…
