Mamelodi Sundowns' first opponents in the CAF Champions League have been confirmed after the preliminary round matches were completed over the weekend.
Sundowns got a bye in the preliminary round of the competition, with top African clubs such as Al Ahly, Esperance, Wydad Casablanca and Raja Casablanca.
The defending DStv Premiership champions, who were knocked out in the quarterfinals by Egyptian giants Al Ahly, will take on Congolese outfit AS Maniema Union. The club progressed to the first round of the Champions League by beating Gabonese club AS Bouenguidi 3-1 on aggregate in the preliminary stages.
This is the first time Sundowns' opponents are competing in the Champions League, having previously taken part in the Confederation Cup, where they have never been past the first round. The Congolese outfit is set to host the first leg clash between October 15 and 16, with the second leg match set to be played a week later.
AmaZulu, meanwhile, will take on five-time Champions League winner TP Mazembe, who are no strangers to playing against South African clubs. This will be a big test for Usuthu head coach Benni McCarthy, after the side showed character to come back from a first leg defeat at home to progress at the expense of Malawian outfit Nyasa Big Bullets.
