Sundowns Confirm Latest Champions League Registration

Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi has confirmed that the club's new Bolivian signing Erwin Saavedra has been registered to play in the CAF Champions League.

Sundowns are due to start their Champions League group stage campaign next week, but the winger is currently part of the Bolivian national team taking part in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers. He featured in Bolivia's 3-2 defeat to Chile on Tuesday, February 1, playing for 61 minutes before giving way for teammate Diego Bejarano.

Bolivia also played against Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela in their World Cup qualifiers over the last 10 days or so. Saavedra started the clash against Trinidad and Tobago and came on as a second half substitute against Venezuela.

The 25-year-old will then make his way to South Africa now to start life with Sundowns.

The Bolivian, who is believed to have signed with Sundowns for a transfer fee in the region of $800,000 (+- R12 million), will give the technical team more options in attack as they look to finally get their hands on a second Champions League title, having fallen short since winning it in 2016.

Mngqithi was excited to announce that they have registered the player, confirming the news to the media with a smile.

"Saavedra we have signed and we have registered for the Champions League, so we have sealed that one. He's a very good football player by the way," Mngqithi told media during the launch of the Nedbank Cup on Thursday night.

Sundowns are also believed to have acquired the services of Ethiopian international Abubeker Nassir, but it is understood that the player will be loaned back to his club Ethiopian Coffee. The striker, who has been on trial with the reigning DStv Premiership champions, was on the scoresheet in a Sundowns friendly against Botswana's Jwaneng Galaxy.

"On Nassir, I prefer not to comment," Mngqithi said.
