'The Conditions Are Not Favourable But We Are Not Complaining'

Mamelodi Sundowns will not be conservative or recklessly throw caution to the wind and go gung-ho against Congolese side Otoho d’Oyo in their CAF Champions League match in Brazzaville on Sunday.

“We’ll be smart,” said Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane at the end of a training session in Chloorkop on Tuesday morning. “They are a very powerful team, very physical and play aggressive and so we got to be smart.

“They gave Raja Casablanca all sorts of problems before narrowly losing 3-2. And mind you, Raja have just won the CAF Super Cup beating Esperance in Qatar and so that tells you the Congolese are no slouches.

“They are very dangerous in set-pieces and have a hard-running winger with a powerful, quick striker. They are typical Champions League team and the conditions are not favourable. The pitch is not flat but we are not complaining.”

Mosimane said the minute they start complaining about the distance, the conditions, the pitch, the weather and mosquitoes, the hotel, then they have already lost the match.

“You are in the Champions League and that is the space where we would like to be as Sundowns. Just get on with whatever is thrown at you and make sure that you do not lose. Even a score draw will be acceptable for me.”

Following a 2-0 triumph over neighbours SuperSport United in their opening ABSA Premiership encounter last week, the South African defending champions switch their focus to the Pan-African club competition.

But Sundowns fans might not see newly signed striker Maurico Affonso anytime soon. The Uruguayan striker is not yet up to the fitness levels Mosimane would like to see him and the technical team is still working on his conditioning.

However, Sammy Seabi is closer to breaking into the starting eleven sooner because according to Mosimane, he did pre-season training with previous club Polokwane City and the coach feels he is closer to getting his debut because he has also been working hard since his arrival.
