Mohomi: I Wasted Two To Three Years At Sundowns

Four years after joining Mamelodi Sundowns from Free State Stars, SuperSport United midfielder Lucky Mohomi has opened up about his challenging time at Mamelodi Sundowns and why he regrets wasting three years of his career.

Mohomi joined a star-studded Sundowns team in 2016, after his stellar performances with Stars.

However, the man from Mamelodi quickly found out that life at Chloorkop would not be a bed of roses as his game-time diminished by the day.

Sundowns ambitions in the transfer market as well as rife competition from the likes of evergreen Hlompho Kekana meant that the 29-year-old made a paltry 32 appearances for the Brazilians in four years!

Speaking to Soccer Laduma edition 1200, Mohomi opens up about his tough period with Sundowns.

“For me, it has been the toughest period of my life. I won’t lie about that, because I’ve never experienced something like that before. But, at the same time, I believe that whatever happens, I am where God wants me to be. So, I know that I had to keep on working hard and doing the right thing, because we know maybe people will think most players will crack under those circumstances and that would be the end. But for me, because of the background that I have and the family I have, they have been supporting me and they are always praying for me that one day everything will change, and we will be okay,” Mohomi said.

The man who is now looking to get back to his best at Tshwane rivals, SuperSport, admits that he has no regrets about his time with Masandawana, but does feel that he wasted two to three years of his career.

“Right now, I don’t have regrets. I did have regrets that I wasted two to three years of my career, but I then said maybe it’s a blessing in disguise. Maybe there is a reason why I was there for that period and not playing, because you don’t know what the future holds for you, so you just need to be grateful for every moment.

“As human beings, we know that there are difficult times that we go through. I am happy with how things turned out. I found a team that believes in me. From the first day I arrived, they have been supporting me, they’ve kept on pushing me and they’ve kept on telling me that it will get better. I can feel the love, the team spirit. I can feel that I have missed this and I’ve missed being on the field,” Mohomi added.

In this week's edition of Soccer Laduma, Mohomi also speaks about:

  • His ambitions with SuperSport
  • Gaining weight when he wasn’t playing
  • Why a move away from Sundowns did not materialize sooner
