Mamelodi Sundowns have been dominating the South African football scenes for years now and Doctor Khumalo has implied that the end of their supremacy “would be nice for our football”.
Khumalo is of the view that Sundowns must be stopped for the sake of South African football as if they continue to have the upper hand over their rivals, the DStv Premiership will be “a one-way traffic”.
With Downs’ rivals, Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and SuperSport still dragging their feet, it remains unclear as to who will step up and stop the dominance of the 2016 African Champions.
“Other teams have to catch up to them now and that can only be a good thing for South African football,” said Khumalo in his latest Soccer Laduma column as Sundowns clinched their fifth consecutive DStv Premiership title.
“They [other teams] have to take on this challenge, otherwise, our league will be one-way traffic. I do believe other teams will come up with a solution so that they are also competitive.
“This doesn’t mean I wish Sundowns don’t win the league again or I have anything against them – no, that’s definitely not the case. My question is simply about whether their dominance will continue or is there someone out there who will raise their hand and say it is enough now?
"That would be nice for our football as it will lift the standard and challenge everyone to up their game.”
