The Zambian senior national team have provided a reason for the withdrawal of Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper, Kennedy Mweene, from the team preparing for their dead-rubber Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match today.
Mweene, who has been getting game-time at Downs this year whenever Denis Onyango has been out injured, had been initially included in Zambia’s squad before the team confirmed that he has been pulled out.
Chipolopolo are scheduled to host Namibia at the Heroes National Stadium in Lusaka this evening. Zambia’s interim coach, Aggrey Chiyangi, has confirmed the withdrawal of Mweene along with midfielder Rainford Kalaba and defender Stopilla Sunzu from the AFCON Group K qualifier squad.
“If you look at Mweene and Stopilla, they have been playing for the national team for a long time and I think, looking at the future, other plans will come in for them but looking at this game, they will not be there. But otherwise they remain important assets for this nation,” said Chiyangi, as quoted by Zambia publication Lusaka Times.
