Result SuperSport United 0-0 Mamelodi Sundowns
Date: 16 January 2021
Venue: Lucas Moripe Stadium
Mamelodi Sundowns and SuperSport United could not be separated as they played to a 0-0 draw in the Tshwane derby on Saturday.
Gaston Sirino, George Maluleka, Tebogo Langerman and Mosa Lebusa came into the starting line-up for the Brazilians as Rivaldo Coetzee, Aubrey Modiba, Lyle Lakay and Ricardo Nascimento dropped out. Meanwhile, Keanan Phillips came in for Siya Nhlapo and Kudakwashe Mahachi replaced Jamie Webber in the Matsatsantsa starting XI.
The first chance fell to Sundowns. Sirino whipped in a teasing corner and Mothobi Mvala rose highest but his header went narrowly wide of the right-hand upright.
Soon after, Mahachi ran onto a flick-on header from Thamsanqa Gabuza but under pressure from Thapelo Morena, badly skewed his first-time effort wide.
In the 21st minute, the long throw-in went into Gabuza and the burly striker held up the ball before teeing up Sipho Mbule, who unleashed a fierce strike that went narrowly over the crossbar.
Four minutes later, Themba Zwane was afforded a space in between the SuperSport midfield and defence and dribbled his way to the edge of the box before laying it off to Sirino, whose shot went over the bar.
Matsatsantsa suffered a blow in the final 15 minutes of the half when Teboho Mokoena was stretchered off with injury and replaced by Nhlapo.
Soon after after the interval, Maluleka floated the ball to the back post for Shalulile and he headed it back across goal for Zwane, who tried to lob the onrushing Ronwen Williams only to see him put too much on the effort as it cleared the crossbar.
Denis Onyango was then tested in the Brazilians goal. Mbule whipped in the corner and Bradley Grobler headed towards goal at the back post but the Ugandan shot-stopper produced a brilliant save to deny the league's top-scorer.
In the 73rd minute, Kermit Erasmus held up the ball on the left-hand side before side-footing the ball into the box for the oncoming Zwane, who sliced his effort wide of the left-hand upright.
Despite Sundowns having the majority of possession and SuperSport mainly restricted to the counter, Kaitano Tembo's side were rock-solid at the back all the game and deserved their point in the end and will be the happier of the two sides.
