Late Drama Sees Downs Extend Winless Run

DStv Premiership

Result: Mamelodi Sundowns 1-1 Swallows

Date: 23 January 2021

Venue: Lucas Moripe Stadium

Swallows FC scored a dramatic last-gasp equaliser to preserve their unbeaten record and claim a 1-1 draw with Mamelodi Sundowns in a DStv Premiership top-of-the-table clash on Saturday.

Skipper Lebohang Mokoena, Thabo Matlaba and Fawaaz Basadien came into the Swallows' starting lineup, while Tebogo Langerman, Gaston Sirino and Kermit Erasmus returned to the Sundowns' starting lineup.

The Brazilians had the first opportunity in the 10th minute when Gaston Sirino was played in and unleashed an effort towards the bottom left-hand corner, forcing Virgil Vries into getting down smartly to his right to make the save.

After some good work by Sirino to evade Sifiso Hlanti at the corner flag, the Uruguayan surged towards goal and played the ball to Zwane, who produced an audacious flick to tee up the skipper Hlompho Kekana but his effort was inches wide.

Swallows' winger Fawaaz Basadien produced a bit of individual brilliance on the right-hand side to outwit two defenders but was just knocked off the ball when he was about to pull the trigger.

Sundowns took the lead on the stroke of half-time when Erasmus produced a fantastic finish into the top right-hand corner from just outside the box after being played through by Kekana.

After a quiet start to the half, Sirino fed Zwane, who attempted to curl one towards the top left-hand corner but it was a relatively tame effort in the end and one that Vries was able to save easily just before the hor mark.

Soon after, Basadien curled an excellent ball through the heart of the Sundowns defence for Gamildien, who was through on goal and just about to pull the trigger when Mothobi Mvala made a timeous interception.

With 15 minutes to go, Kgaogela Sekgota produced a terrific cross from the left-hand side to the back post for Birds skipper Mokoena, who had made a charging run into the box but volleyed narrowly wide of the left-hand upright.

One final opportunity fell to the visitors with the last kick of the game. George Maluleka gave away a free-kick on the edge of the box, for which he was yellow-carded. Malinga stepped up and his powerful free-kick was palmed into the path of substitute Musa Nyatama, who headed home for a simple finish.
