As Mamelodi Sundowns prepare to take on Algerian club CR Belouizdad, Soccer Laduma looks at their group stage record against North African opponents away from home since 2016.
Sundowns have reached the group stages of the competition every year since 2016 and have faced a north African opponent each time.
When they won the competition in 2016, they came up against Egyptian giants Zamalek and Algerian side ES Setif, though their victory over the latter was annulled after the Algerians were disqualified from the competition. They did register crucial 2-1 victory over Zamalek that year, thanks to goals from Tiyani Mabunda and Khama Billiat.
That is one of two victories Sundowns have registered against a north African side during the group stages. In 2019, they beat Algerian side USM Alger, thanks to a soliary goal by captain Hlompho Kekana. The Brazilians have lost twice away from home against a north African opponent, that being Wydad Casablanca.
The clash on Sunday, February 28, will be played in Tanzania, on neutral ground, after Sundowns’ opponents raised concerns over COVID-19 restrictions.
