Downs Confirm Plans Despite Season Delay

Even though the 2019/20 season has been delayed by a further two weeks, Mamelodi Sundowns confirmed their ongoing plans for resumption.

The Brazilians headed out to Rustenburg to start their training away from the epicenter of the Coronavirus, which is now Gauteng, and at the time the restart was penciled in for July 18, which would have been this past weekend.

However, SAFA rejected this proposal from the Premier Soccer League and argued that there were still outstanding issues of compliance by clubs and that referees needed more time to be fit, therefore it was necessary to extend the season the date to August 1.

Asked whether the club would be returning from the Royal Marang Hotel in the North West seeing as the league’s plans have been scuppered, Downs official Yogesh Singh told the Siya crew that the squad will remain in Rustenburg.

It is likely then that coach Pitso Mosimane’s team will continue to keep fit while in camp together instead of having to be scarred around like their PSL rivals, who are reporting daily for training while adhering to the safety regulations.

Mosimane has previously shared his experiences training under lockdown and now in the “new normal”, with the club also confirming six injuries at the weekend.

Should SAFA stick to the agreed new date next month, clubs will then be expected to report into the biologically safe environment in Gauteng a few days prior in order to attempt to complete the season before August 31.

Downs, who are defending champions, were second behind Kaizer Chiefs on the Absa Premiership log table pre-Covid19 and have a game in hand from the outstanding nine games.
