Downs’ Latest Done Deal…

Mamelodi Sundowns are showing their loyalty to one of their longest serving players by offering him a new deal beyond the current season.

Kennedy Mweene, the 35-year-old goalkeeper who joined the Brazilians nearly seven years ago from Free State Stars, is likely to stay at Chloorkop until he decides to hang up his gloves after the club offered him a three-year contract.

The Siya crew understands that Mweene’s existing contract was expected to run down at the end of this month, but Sundowns have moved quickly to make sure that doesn’t happen – showing just how much they value the veteran goal minder.

Asked for comment on the new deal, the players’ agent, Basia Michaels of QT Sports said she preferred to leave such matters to the club to announce.

But the club does not usually confirm contract details to the media before they’ve issued a statement of their own.

Nevertheless, the news, which have been confirmed by reliable Siya sources, will be more than welcomed by Mweene, winner of the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations with his national team Zambia. It was a year after that memorable triumph that he moved to Chloorkop to beef up coach Pitso Mosimane’s team and has collected plenty accolades since then – four Absa Premiership titles, the Telkom Knockout, Nedbank Cup and the CAF Champions League.
