According to Siya sources, Mamelodi Sundowns are expected to step up their interest one of Orlando Pirates’ star players.
He may turn out to be quite a luxury if a deal can be done in the coming months given the Brazilians’ depth in midfield, but it’s understood Xola Mlambo’s name has again been mentioned in Chloorkop corridors.
The Siya crew reported early last month that Downs were tracking his situation at his current club Pirates seeing as he’d become a fringe player under coach Josef Zinnbauer having not played since November last year.
It’s thought that Rhulani Mokwena’s return to Sundowns could be a factor in suggestions that the Brazilians are prepared to step up their interest in Mlambo, the two having worked together at Pirates before the coach’s departure in March.
Mlambo, 29, does still have a year left on his and is also on Kaizer Chiefs’ radar, as reported by the Siya crew last year. A swap or cash deal would pave the way for his Buccaneers’ exit, though competition at Downs would be stiff.
They have recently acquired George Maluleka, Grant Margeman and still have captain Hlompho Kekana, Tiyani Mabunda, Andile Jali and Sammy Seabi in central midfield, though Oupa Manyisa was released and Lucky Mohomi on his way out, too.
