Mamelodi Sundowns

U-Turn On Downs Future Complete…

Mamelodi Sundowns have finally made a decision on veteran defender Ricardo Nascimento, the Siya crew has been led to believe.

It’s understood the Brazilian has now been registered by the club for the 2021/22 season after it was initially thought he would part ways with Sundowns, ending a six year spell, in favour of remaining in his native country.

Nascimento left SA at the end of the previous season (in late May) to undergo rehabilitation for a long-term injury and was unavailable when his teammates returned for training ahead of the new campaign as a result.

The Siya crew reported then that Nascimento had requested not to come back, meaning Downs would have to find a suitable replacement.

Nkosinathi Sibisi from Golden Arrows and Cape Town City’s Taariq Fielies were touted as potential targets as the reigning DStv Premiership champions were desperately attempting to rope in another centre back before the transfer window slammed shut on August 31.

Downs co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi had also described the Nascimento situation as a “banana skin”, citing that it would be tricky to register the player if he’s not fully fit.

But the defender flew back to Chloorkop a few days before the deadline and has been back in training as reported in the latest edition of Soccer Laduma.

Now, the Siya crew has it on good authority that Downs have finally taken the decision to register Nascimento and expect him to boost their backline in the coming weeks, though he is still a bit far off with his match fitness.

Following their 2-0 win over Kaizer Chiefs on Sunday, co-coach Rulani Mokwena told the media that the technical team were looking forward to having both Mosa Lebusa and Nascimento back in the line-up as they’ve had to do without a left footed centre back.

That then confirms what the Siya crew has been told.
