Mamelodi Sundowns have set the record straight on the future of midfielder George Maluleka, who joined the club from Kaizer Chiefs three months ago.
The Siya crew reported on October 16 that there was talk ‘Mido’ could be a casualty of the decision taken by the Downs technical team to trim their large squad.
Cape Town City had been mooted as a potential destination, although there was conflicting information over whether this move would materialise when the Siya crew went digging – two sources suggested the switch was imminent, while three others denied any knowledge of the two clubs coming to an agreement!
Maluleka’s agent Sean Roberts and City chairman John Comitis also shot down the rumour.
As many as 13 new players arrived at Chloorkop recently and ‘Mido’ was one of them, but coach Manqoba Mnqgithi had said none of the signings were guaranteed to stay with a clear-out expected before the transfer window slams shut at the end of November.
Mnqgithi was asked specifically about Maluleka following their 3-0 win over Kaizer Chiefs at the weekend, a game in which the midfielder came off the bench to make his Downs debut and was fouled in the box for a penalty converted by Themba Zwane.
“Just to clarify this unfounded rumour – maybe it’s people who are trying to kill somebody else’s career. I was very straightforward that he (Mido) is in our plans. We know what he is capable of,” Mnqgithi told journalists.
“Even when he came on, we knew what we expected from him. We wanted him to drive in and assist us in keeping possession. But you also know that he has got a very good pass to try and find the spaces behind the defence – both (Daniel) Cardoso and (Ramahlwe) Mphahlele were climbing higher up. We wanted somebody that could easily deliver the same pass that Hlompho (Kekana) can deliver in that space. I was impressed to see him going as far as getting the penalty, which for me was encouraging. I have been telling him that his game is short of those incisive moments – shots at goals and scoring. The box entry was very good and I don’t think people give him the credit he deserves. But it is only a matter of time.”
