The anticipation of the end of the Absa Premiership title race continues to mount despite no confirmation about when the 2019/20 campaign will resume.
The Premier Soccer League will host a Board of Governors meeting tomorrow to determine the way forward for domestic football, this after the country moved to level four of the nationwide lockdown.
While the football fraternity patiently awaits the official announcement, conversations on the Absa Premiership title race remain relevant.
Kaizer Chiefs, who are favourites in race for the league the title, are currently at the top of the log with a four-point advantage over Mamelodi Sundowns in second place, although the Brazilians do have a game in hand.
Speaking to the Siya crew this week, former Orlando Pirates winger, Dikgang Mabalane was asked whether he thinks that Sundowns with their league-title winning experience, could end up overtaking Amakhosi for the title.
“I think Sundowns are capable of doing that (overtaking Chiefs), I am not undermining Chiefs but I am saying that – if Chiefs take their foot off the pedal for whatever reason, (if) they don’t perform the same, Sundowns will definitely overtake them and again, why I am saying it is based on – pound for pound, Sundowns have got the biggest squad, frankly they’ve got better quality in terms of depth, player for player, (and) Sundowns obviously have some of the best players in the country.
“In that regard, I think Sundowns have a bit of an edge but it doesn’t determine whether they will win the league or not because Chiefs also knows what it takes and they have a huge opportunity here and it is in their hands so they are well aware of Sundowns but Sundowns is a team fully capable of overtaking Chiefs,” he said.
