Mamelodi Sundowns are on the verge of another deal, the Siya crew has been informed.
In the latest edition of Soccer Laduma, we revealed that the club had initiated fresh talks with star utility player Rivaldo Coetzee to have him sign a new contract.
Now, his agent Mike Makaab of Prosport International has confirmed that, though Downs have an added option on his client’s existing contract, it was pleasing that they are already keen on offering him another one.
“As I am talking to you I am looking at his signed Glasgow Celtic contract. But he has taken that on the chin and it’s a testimony to who he is as a person, he’s not let that drag him down,” Makaab recalled Coetzee’s failed move to Scotland in 2017.
It’s when Downs brought the player from Ajax Cape Town to Chloorkop for a reported fee of R10-million even though he was still expected to have corrective surgery on his foot.
“He has now come into the fore and I think he has been an absolute revelation this season. Credit to Sundowns – they took him on knowing that he had an injury that had to be rehabilitated, and that’s the only reason Brendan Rodgers (then Celtic manager) didn’t sign him, because he wanted him to come in and play,” explained Makaab.
‘Riva’ has been a constant feature in Downs’ busy schedule so far this season.
“I am hoping to finalise something new for him in the next couple of weeks, but the club does have an option on him anyway. Sundowns gave him a season to get back on his feet, absolutely wonderful,” added the agent.
“Whatever he does now, he is repaying that loyalty that the club showed him. That’s important, for football players to acknowledge what their employers have done for them, particularly employers that have gone the extra mile. Loyalty in life is a commodity that is scarce.”
