As Pitso Mosimane searches for another forward with Tokelo Rantie continuing to train with Mamelodi Sundowns and Khama Billiat being linked with a sensational return, could Thapelo Morena be the solution?
In Saturday’s 2-0 win against SuperSport United, Morena was used in an advanced role against with Anele Ngcongca at right back as Mauricio Affonso and Emiliano Tade missed out with small injuries. Having initially started on the right flank, Morena often switched over to the left. However, as the game got more stretched with SuperSport chasing a draw, assistant coach, Manqoba Mngqithi suggested putting the speed merchant up front.
The change worked as Morena’s pace on a counter attack set up Themba Zwane for the second goal. In January’s 2-1 win against Highlands Park, Morena led the line and contributed a goal and an assist. He was selected to use his pace against veteran, Bevan Fransman. He also moved up front for the final part of Sundowns’ 0-0 draw with Orlando Pirates in April to unsettle Happy Jele.
In this game, he delivered a very impressive display. The stats reflect that.
Morena had four attempts at goal in his 90 minutes on the pitch from his 49 touches. Two of those shots hit the target and only Hlompho Kekana (5) had more shots for Sundowns.
Morena picked up two assists in this game, the same amount that he contributed in the whole PSL season last time out. He created the goals for both Sibusiso Vilakazi and Zwane. He set up a game-high four chances, delivered two open-play crosses and made three dribbles.
In this form, Morena playing in the forward positions could perhaps be the solution to Pitso Mosimane’s search for greater firepower. He could also get himself back into the Bafana Bafana mix having mixed out on the Africa Cup of Nations squad.
