Siya sources have informed the crew that there’s a slim chance of the deal happening, but Mamelodi Sundowns are interested in signing Thembinkosi Lorch!
The Orlando Pirates talisman has emerged as a target for the defending DStv Premiership champions – a move that would be considered a major coup should it happen, though insiders at Chloorkop are less optimistic about successful talks.
It’s understood Lorch, 27, remains contracted to the Buccaneers for two more years beyond the current season and Downs would have to pay a massive fee to get him to put pen to paper and cross the floor to Tshwane.
However, it is worth noting that the details of Lorch’s Pirates contract have rarely been made public from the time he joined the club in 2015, but indications are that he has two more seasons still to go.
One source gave the impression that the deal would be near impossible, telling the Siya crew, “it’s complicated” when asked what Downs’ chances of winning over the Bafana Bafana star were.
Lorch has had his most recent injury status questioned within the football fraternity and that led to speculation surrounding his future, though insiders at Pirates dismissed the “fake injury” reports, while his agent Jazzman Mahlakgane also rebuffed them.
The attacker made his long-awaited return to action two weekends ago in his side’s 1-1 draw at home against Raja Casablanca in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup quarterfinal fixture, coming off the bench and being eased back.
After more than three months on the sidelines, Lorch was named in Pirates’ starting line-up for the return leg, but could do very little to help the Buccaneers avoid an embarrassing 4-0 thrashing in Morocco on Sunday.
Indications are that Lorch is pushing for a move to leave Pirates, preferably to go to Europe, where the player himself confirmed there was interest almost two years ago.
Belgian sides Royal Union Saint-Gilloise and Club Brugge as well French Ligue 1 outfits Dijon Football Cote d’Or and Toulouse FC were said to have all been keen.
At his age, however, it’s unlikely there the interest is still as strong.
Recently, there was talk from some of the Kaizer Chiefs die-hard fans linking Lorch to their club as soon as the FIFA ban is lifted in July.
The Siya crew, however, investigated it further and the speculation was rebuffed by high-ranking officials, who called it rubbish and not worth entertaining in any form.
