Downs Maintain Top Spot After Draw With CAF Rivals

CAF Champions League

Result Wydad Casablanca 0-0 Mamelodi Sundowns

Date: 07 December 2019

Venue: Stade Mohamed V

Mamelodi Sundowns maintained top spot in Group C after securing a point at CAF Champions League rivals Wydad Casablanca on Saturday night.

The Brazilians, who claimed a 3-0 win in their opening group game, made their intentions clear from the onset after they had a goal disallowed inside the first minute.

Sundowns had failed to win in any of their previous encounters at Wydad and they were desperate to end that statistic as Gaston Sirino went close a snap-shot after 17 minutes.

It wasn't all Sundowns in the first half though, as Wydad did embark on a couple forays forward although the Sundowns defence managed to hold their own.

Denis Oyango came to the visitors' rescue on 39 minutes after pulling off a superb five minutes before the interval to deny the hosts a certain goal.

Wydad shot-stopper Ahmed Tagnaouti was called upon at the other minutes later to deny Thapelo Morena in a one-on-one situation on the stroke of halftime.

It was more of the same in the second half as Wydad started the brighter of the sides, but the Sundowns defence remained resolute early on.

Mosimane then opted for a double change on the hour mark as Jose Ali Meza and Themba Zwane made way for Lebohang Maboe and Sphelele Mkhulise.

Sirino was proving to be the visitors' biggest threat on the night for the Absa Premiership champions as he went close with another effort from distance that sailed just wide of the mark on 76 minutes.

Despite a late push from the Brazilians, 0-0 was how the encounter ended as Sundowns remain top of the group after two minutes while Wydad are yet to secure a win.

Here's how the lined up:

Sundowns: 14. Onyango, 4. Langerman, 16. Ngcongca, 2. Madisha, 5. Lebusa, 15. Jali, 8. Kekana, 18. Zwane, 27. Morena, 10. Sirino, 23. Meza

Subs: 1. Mweene, 6. Arendse, 13. Mabunda, 7. Lakay, 11. Vilakazi, 25. Maboe, 21. Mkhulise
