CAF Champions League
Teams: Otoho d'Oyo 2-1 Mamelodi Sundowns
Date: 11 August 2019
Venue: Stade Omnisport Marien Ngouabi d'Owando
It was not a good weekend for South African sides in the CAF Champions League as Mamelodi Sundowns suffered defeat to Otoho d'Oyo in the first leg of their preliminary round tie.
Andile Jali was handed his first start of the season alongside Tiyani Mabunda in the middle of the park while Phakamani Mahlambi joined Lebohang Maboe in the attack, with Sibusiso Vilakazi and Themba Zwane dropping to the bench.
The Brazilians were dealt a blow early on after the hosts were awarded a penalty after just four minutes, which was converted for the early lead.
Sundowns looked for a response as Phakamani Mahlambi had an effort saved soon after, although Otoho made the most of their chances as they doubled via a corner.
Things got worse for the Absa Premiership champions 10 minutes before the break when captain Hlompho Kekana was shown a red card, forcing the visitors to play with 10 men for the rest of the game.
Pitso Mosimane opted for a double change at the start of the second half, with Mahlambi and Jali making way for Vilakazi and Zwane, who starred in the win over SuperSport United last weekend.
There was a bit of hope for Sundowns in the second half as Thapelo Morena reduced the deficit with an effort from around 25-yards out for a vital away goal.
However, that was to be the only bit of joy in front of goal for the Brazilians, but they do have an away goal to take in to the second leg in two weeks time.
Here's how they lined up:
Sundowns: Onyango, Ngcongca, Morena, Arendse, Lebusa, Langerman, Jali, Kekana (C), Mabunda, Mahlambi, Maboe.
Subs: Pieterse, Zwane, Madisha, Lakay, Vilakazi, Sirino, Mkhulise.
