Downs Run Riot In CAF As New Signing Makes Debut

CAF Champions League

Result: CR Belouizdad 1-5 Mamelodi Sundowns

Date: 28 February 2021

Venue: Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium

Mamelodi Sundowns maintained their perfect start in the CAF Champions League group stages after hammering ten-man CR Belouizdad 5-1 on Sunday afternoon.

Sundowns made only one change from the win over Baroka in their last outing, as Thapelo Morena was recalled with Themba Zwane and Gaston Sirino flanking striker Peter Shalulile upfront.

The Brazilians had a quick start as they got a double advantage in the third minute after Chouaib Keddad blocked Zwane's shot on the line with his hand and was sent off, with the Tshwane giants also receving a penalty.

Zwane went up to take the spot-kick himself and dispatched a low strike into the bottom corner to give Masandawana the lead.

The Brazilians kept on fashioning chances but they lacked the final pass and shot-stopper Denis Onyango preserved their lead ten minutes before the break coming off his line to deny Rayen Benderrouya a clear chance.

However, Amir Sayoud eventually levelled matters for the Algerian side on the stroke of half-time with a left footed shot inside the box after a pass by Zakaria Draoui from a quick counter-attack and the sides went to the break level pegging.

With Kennedy Mweene replacing Onyango at the break, Sundowns had another bright start to the second stanza after Shalulile restored their lead three minutes from the break with a close-range header from Lyle Lakay's corner.

Zwane gave the Brazilians a two-goal cushion ten minutes inside the second stanza with a strike into the bottom corner after a chip over the defence by Gaston Sirino to complete his brace.

The rout continued as Lebohang Maboe gave Masandawana a fourth goal in the last quarter of an hour, finishing off a good team move after a threaded pass by second-half substitute Kermit Erasmus.

Erasmus rounded off the scoring in the last minute with a close range strike after a cut-back by Zwane as the Tshwane giants pulled four points clear the top of Group B with a perfect six points.

Here's how they started:

Sundowns: Onyango, Nascimento, Lebusa, Lakay, Coetzee, Morena, Mkhulise, Maboe, Sirino, Zwane, Shalulile.

Subs: Mweene, Erasmus, Jali, Mvala, Kapinga, Modiba, De Reuck
