Oupa Manyisa was hoping to use Saturday’s mid-season friendly match against Kaizer Chiefs to make a case for a starting berth.
But the Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder is now expected to miss the rest of the 2019/20 season – which is only two months in – following a devastating injury blow he suffered at FNB Stadium during the Shell Helix Ultra Cup.
Manyisa, 31, was a forced substitution in the first half of a game that Sundowns eventually went on to lose 4-2. And it was a nasty injury.
“I think his Achilles is gone. I think that’s it for him for the rest of the season and it’s very sad,” was coach Mosimane’s update to the media after the game.
The former Orlando Pirates captain has recently been considered a fringe player at Sundowns and the match at the weekend was a rare opportunity.
Manyisa has played for the club this season, but in the two-legged CAF Champions League first round tie against a lowly team from the Seychelles, which ended with an emphatic aggregate score of 16-1 as Downs powered into the group stages.
Last season the midfielder featured in just seven games in all competitions.
